New arrests include senior municipal officers
The Jamaican police crackdown on internet lottery scammers has continued this week, with the arrests of two elected Jamaican municipal officials.
The duo now stands accused of involvement in a multi-million dollar fraudster ring.
According to Police Superintendent Leon Clunis, the arrested officials are Kingston Deputy Mayor Michael Troupe and St. James Councilor Sylvan Reid, as well as Troupe's two sons, and they were all detained in an early morning police raid at their respective homes.
Apart from the arrests, the raid resulted in the seizure of cash and firearms from the arrested persons' homes. It has been estimated by the police that the lottery scam of mostly elderly Americans generated about $300 million a year.
So far, the action resulted in the arrest of 142 people related to the scam, although only 19 of them have been formally charged to date.
