Long before Cinderella there was Rhodopis………

In Ancient Egypt, Amasis a Pharaoh ruler, threatened by the invasion of Persia invited Greeks to settle in his land to strengthen his country. He gave them the entire city of Naucratis to be called their own where they could trade and sell.

Charaxos a wealthy Greek was walking through the market place when he saw the most beautiful girl being sold for auction. Determined to be the higher bidder, Rhodopis was now his. Rhodopis told Charaxos her tale of how she was carried away by pirates as a child. How she became a slave and the kindness of another slave who told her fables about animals, birds and human beings to get her through each day. Charaxos felt sorry for her and gave her jewels and beautiful clothes and a home of her own.

One day while bathing in her secret garden, one of her servant’s held her rose red slippers. Rhodopis loved her slippers and wore them with great pride. Out from the sky a eagle came soaring towards the servant and swooped up one of the rose red slippers and flew away. Rhodopis was in disbelief and wept at the loss of her slipper.

As if the eagle was sent from the gods, he flew up the Nile straight to the palace. The Pharoah Amasis, sat in the palace courtyard hearing complaints from the towns people. The eagle swooped down and dropped the red slipper in his lap. The towns people in surprise, were not as surprised as the Pharoah himself. He picked up the rose red slipper and admired the tiny shoe and it’s workmanship.

He decreed that messengers be sent throughout all the land to find the owner of the slipper and she will become the bride of Pharaoh! The messengers obeyed his orders and travelled throughout Egypt. They made their way to Rhodopis who was sitting in the garden. The messenger showed her the slipper and she cried with happiness.

She was summonsed to leave immediately and must not obey, for the great Pharoah will honor her with the highest place in his Royal House of Women. The Pharoah was certain the eagle was a sign to search for her.

When Amasis saw her for the first time he was overwhelmed with her beauty. He made her his Queen and the Royal Lady of all Egypt, where they lived happily ever after!
