Maltese Lottery Concession Causes Fierce Competition
Intralot strives to save the concession

It has been reported this week that Greek lotto giant Intralot (trading as Maltco) has been pursuing its fight to keep in possession its seven year Maltese lotteries concession, which is to expire soon, as it may end up in the hands of the only other bidder, Lottomatica subsidiary GTECH.

Apparently, Maltco has boosted its bid to government after the overturn of an injunction taken out by the company. It has been specified that the court action contested the Government's call for international contenders to enter into a bid process for the business with Maltco under the pretext that its concession should have been automatically renewed based on good performance over the past seven years.

In a comment on the overturned injunction, Judge Joseph Zammit McKeon said "as Maltco's licence conditions were clear, it is welcome to compete in a new expression of interest."

However, despite the fact that Intralot and GTECH are old competitors, it may come as a surprise that they will together potentially enter an alliance with Greek gambling monopoly OPAP for the exclusive licence to operate State Lotteries in Greece.
