Veterans Organizations Permitted to Use Bingo to Pay Bills?
New Jersey Governor Christie signed new legislation that will let veterans organizations use proceeds from games of chance such as bingo to pay bills.

Organizations such as American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars would be able to use the cash from games and raffles pending approval.

Right now these organizations are not permitted to use the proceeds to pay electric or heating bills. The money is to be put toward education, religious or community programs.

"Non-profits and organizations that serve our veterans have undergone difficult times in recent years as many people have had less to give because of economic hardships," a bill sponsor, state Sen. Kip Bateman R-Somerville, said in a statement. "This bill gives veterans groups additional financial flexibility by allowing them to tap a new stream of revenues to help pay their bills."

There are mixed reactions from New Jersey veterans but they would be pleased to be able to use funds from games of chance to make renovations to meeting places.
