West Virginia Lottery Appoints John Myers as New Director
The state of West Virginia is making certain changes in Lottery, as governor, Jim Justice, appoints John Myers as the new director of the regulatory body, effective immediately. The outgoing, Alan Larrick, announced his resignation on September 1st, following the territory’s decision to allow sports wagering at local clubs.

The state’s official lottery was founded on November 6th, 1984 although the first tickets were sold in January 1986. Today’s revenues from sales surpass more than $1.1 billion annually, generating approximately $520 million for the people per year.

The newly appointed executive, John Myers, is quite familiar with his future activities, since he already served as acting director of Lottery between 2015 and 2017. Up until the governor’s decision, Myers worked as Secretary of Administration for the Justice Administration.

The Joint Standing Committee on Finance of West Virginia is working proactively on recent modifications of the Lottery Commission. The topic of last week’s legislative interim meetings at the State Capitol addressed the modifications’ effects on sports betting operations, considering the first official tax week of sports betting made a yield of $29,541.75 at the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races.

From the day it launched, West Virginia Lottery has generated more than $9.98 billion in proceeds for its residents. The Legislature uses lottery income to help improve public education and quality of senior citizens by investing in scholarships, nutrition programs, in-home care services and tourism industry.

With more than 40 different instant games, including Keno, Daily 3, Daily 4, and Cash 25, but also Powerball, Mega Millions and Hot Lotto, the lottery keeps increasing its portfolio on a regular basis. The catalogue even features video lottery and table games that can be played at the state’s four racetrack casinos.
